From my experiences, the only thing a wiring problem might do is generate a
hum, of course bad lightning arresters at the pole, critters chewing the
wires outside and all, can also cause the same kind of hum, sometimes worse
sometimes not as bad, but you're not going to hurt anything if the wiring's
backward. Depending on how the wiring is, if it's in series or not, you may
not even notice it at all, the hum is mainly when it's in series. I'd tend
to say if pulling the plugs and battery/s for a few seconds don't help, more
than likely you're getting junk products for some reason, maybe they're all
like that now, maybe it's a bad run of them, it could be anything. I haven't
bought a house phone in many years and have no intention of ever having one
again so I have no clue what's out there anymore, honestly, I know very few
people that do have them anymore so the quality control probably is slipping
with the money they're not making off them anymore.
