Harvey, I don't use openbook, but I have a few questions/ideas.
1. Do you see the hp scanner in control pannel?
2.  If you look in all programs, you will find something like hp scanning 
software.
3. Using this software, see if you can scan something.
4.  If you have a later version of word, you will find inseert scan in the 
insert menu.  See if that works.
If all of theese things work, look in openbook's settings to see what 
scanner is selected there.
Right now, we don't know if the scanner is working anywhere.
