turn the things off. press ctrl+p for preferences, then in the tree 
view, navigate up to general and untick the box that says something 
like, check for new updates at startup. I don't have them popup here. if 
I want to update it I'll do it at my own leisure. and sometimes, 
updating isn't always benificial to those of us that rely on the good 
graces of software vendors to keep their product accessible.
