Diane;
I believe Apple devices use MP4 or Quicktime formats for video
the extensions would be .MP4 .MPV. or .MOV
For a video converter I use a free program called Super
http://www.erightsoft.com/SUPER.html
it lists apple ipod in the output type, but I haven't actually tried it.
This article says quicktime will convert most movie files to apple format
