Bob, do you have active sync installed?  has it taken over com1?
Go to control pannel, system, device manager, ports com lpt, and look at the 
settings for com 1.  Try the trouble shooter to make sure the port is 
working properly.  I am surprized that the cable is not USB.
That may not solve your problem, but it's a start.
