<<Disclaimer: Verify this information before applying it to your situation.>> Here are some references to Dr. Fasano's research on gut permeability: http://brain.hastypastry.net/forums/showthread.php?p=243323 http://www.umm.edu/news/releases/diabetes_prevention.htm http://www.newswise.com/articles/view/510016/ The ALBA website has some great articles, a bit technical for the average reader but very interesting: http://www.albatherapeutics.com/ProductDevelopment/TherapeuticAreas/CeliacDisease/tabid/80/Default.aspx http://www.albatherapeutics.com/ProductDevelopment/TherapeuticAreas/IBD/tabid/82/Default.aspx Fasano's AT-1001 does not cure or heal leaky gut, nor does it address the reason for the body's over-production of zonulin. It is simply a dose-by-dose method of "closing the gates" for a limited amount of time (until another pill is taken), and initial trials seem to indicate that it does indeed work. Here are some very good articles explaining leaky gut theory: http://www.albatherapeutics.com/Vision/ScienceandTechnology/MucosalBiology/tabid/73/Default.aspx http://www.albatherapeutics.com/Vision/ScienceandTechnology/TightJunctions/tabid/74/Default.aspx http://www.albatherapeutics.com/Vision/ScienceandTechnology/Inflammation/tabid/75/Default.aspx http://www.albatherapeutics.com/Vision/ScienceandTechnology/Autoimmunity/tabid/76/Default.aspx Alba Therapeutics is currently developing a similar drug for asthma, (theory that in asthma the airways are "leaky") http://www.albatherapeutics.com/ProductDevelopment/TherapeuticAreas/Asthma/tabid/83/Default.aspx As in many autoimmune diseases including celiac disease, barrier function in asthma patients is compromised. Tight junctions of the epithelial cellular barrier in the lungs of asthma patients are leaky. This loss of barrier function allows antigens and environmental triggers to pass through the epithelial barrier and elicit a T-cell mediated autoimmune response in genetically susceptible individuals. Alba's approach to therapeutic intervention for asthma focuses on barrier function and the inhibition of increased paracellular permeability leading to the increased presentation of environmental stimuli and, ultimately, the inflammatory cascade.
