the appeal of a stand-alone reader is that, when I'm scanning, I'm only
scanning, so I don't need to have anything else running and I don't need to
have anything but a scanner (and maybe a keypad or small keyboard) where I'm
working. pausing to check email, etc., is distracting and tends to lead to
scanning errors, like skipped pages. Though I'm the primary user of my
computer, other people do need it from time to time, and they don't have
access to it if I'm scanning a book or long document. finally, I've got so
many things hooked up to the computer that my workspace, where notes and my
coffee go, is relatively small. Being able to move the scanner to its own
table would be nice. It's more about lifestyle than actual computer knowhow,
but I'm not willing to pay a couple of thousand dollars for it,.
