At work, my monitor is connected but turned off 99% of the time. I only
turn it on when I want someone to look at the screen. Of course, I often
forget to turn it back off.

I have run computers at home without any monitor attached at all.

Currently, at home, I use a switch box so that my wife has a monitor on
her desk, and if I ever need to have someone see my screen, I hit the
switch and my computer displays on her monitor.

Hope that helps.
