The reason you lost this ability is because you had made Firefox your
default browser, one of the options that is checked unless you uncheck it
during installation (I think), and when you uninstalled it you did so
without reversing that state. You need now to either have the checkbox
checked in Internet Explorer, "let Internet Explorer check if it is the
default browser": and/or, reinstall Firefox and then uncheck its default
browser status. I have both IE and Firefox and neither is my default
browser, so internet Explorer assumes that role.

I recently had to uninstall Firefox due to numerous problems with it.
However, when I did so I lost the ability to click on an email link and get
it started. Installing ie&.0 did not help. How can I fix this problem?
