I concur with what has already been said. 
 
This feature of the mailing list is controlled by the list owner or can be initiated  on the sign up page. Some list can be changed by sending a request to the list serve although I have no idea how to do this. You could ask the list owner. The feature is not controlled by your email program or ISP.
 
As for the reply and reply to all in your email program, All  I can say is I know how I would like this feature to work. I am on four mailing lists  and it seems to work differently on each list. I have been told this feature is controlled by the individual's email program. The person telling me this had no idea how one would do this. 
 
 I would think it would be fixed when the list was first set up.  If anyone haas any thoughts on this I would be interested in hearing them.

I am also in a google group and I have noticed a couple things:
 
When I intend to post by replying, I have to use Reply / All   Otherwise my reply goes only to the original poster, not to the whole list.
 
I think I also remember some option during the signup process that allows me to check whether I want to see things I post to the list. I actually do want to see my own postings just to know they have been sent.

Well, for this list, as you all know, it's set to reply, not reply all.
Some lists are set up to reply to all.
It's done that way by the list owner.
