Subject: FoxFlash - Breaking News - MJFF awards $4.6 million to help advance neurotrophic factors as transformative PD treatments
June 22, 2010

The Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson’s Research has announced $4.6 million in awards to support two promising studies of neurotrophic factor therapies for Parkinson’s disease. Neurotrophic factors are specialized proteins that protect and nourish nerve cells in the brain, including the dopamine neurons that die in PD. These special proteins have shown potential to slow or stop the progression of Parkinson’s – a key unmet need for people living with the disease.

The two studies of neurotrophic factors that MJFF is supporting bring together leading investigators to help speed this avenue of research toward better PD treatments. Read MJFF’s press release for more study details.
To better understand the challenges of developing neurotrophic factor treatments, listen to a podcast with Andy Grove, co-founder of Intel and senior advisor to MJFF. Mr. Grove believes a multidisciplinary approach is needed to overcome these challenges and help realize the potential of neurotrophic factors.
