    Hey, Pat:

If pushing and holding the A or function key doesn't unlock the rig as it 
should, try this:

Turn off the radio, and then push the 3 key while turning the radio back on.

I can't remember where I got this bit of info, but what you describe 
happened to me once, and that's how I got out of it.  Don't have a clue as 
to why it works, but it did for me at least once, and the radio survived 
relatively unscathed.
