*gluten ataxia. Marios Hadjivassiliou at University of Sheffield and
Mark Hallett at NIH have studied this in great detail. Here's a good
link pointing to the research: http://www.ataxiaalternatives.com/
research/articles.htm If your neurologist is unfamiliar, he should
investigate it.
*I have experienced the same symptoms and giving up gluten didn't
cure it. ...... The Sjogren's is blamed for the brain fog, loss of
short term memory and the unstable gait and loss of balance. The
balance and gait problems are made worse by fatigue. Fatigue is a
big symptom of Sjogren's, as well as dry mouth and dry eyes. I tend
to lose my balance easiest when I try to change directions, but can
do it walking across a flat floor in a straight line. When I'm tired
I tend to lean to the left, bumping into doorways and hallway walls.
I also have peripheralneuropathy from the Sjogren's. [ I found this
amazing as it describes my "stumble" exactly- it always to the LEFT-
weird... a few people said it was Sjogren's that was causing the
problem not Celiac]
*The answer is "yes". I think mine can be blamed on gluten ataxia.
Also I as much worse with the walking and the brain fog when I eat
dairy products as well. They do the same thing as gluten. I was found
at Enterolab to be reactive to three milk proteins (IgA). One is
Casein and I don't remember the others at the moment but they are
just as bad a gluten for me. You might get tested for other food
reactions there. [ a couple of people suggested it may be the result
of other good allergies/intolerance]
*I too have problems with an unsteady gait every time I stand up and
start to walk. It usually goes away soon, especially if I continue
walking. If I am at a shopping mall it will come back again when I
get tired so I always take a cane with me. Sometimes it is
embarrassing - I feel as if people must think I've had too much to
drink. other people with CD don't seem to mention it but lots of
people on my fibromyalgia list complain of how their gait has been
affected and worrying that people will think they are drunk. I did
see a neurologist for awhile but he said there was nothing he could
do to help me so there was no point in my coming back. My pain
specialist has put me on Lyrica and that has helped some.
and finally
*I have two men in my support group who have brain atrophy which is
related to celiac disease. I will send you a study from a doctor
who is researching just this situation.
There is also info in Dr. Green's book, Celiac Disease a Hidden
Epidemic and Ron Hoggan's book Dangerous Grains.
[In about 7 hours I will have my endoscopy, I will send any more
responses that are different then what I've already posted after I
recover from the anesthesia- for me that may mean a couple of
days! :) ]
thank you, thank you!
