Thanks to all who had suggestions.  Those who suggested the google maps 
page and choose the speech friendly link just leads to the page that will 
not load in lynx.

I did find a site which seems to tap into the old text only version of 
mapquest and provides exactly what was desired.  For instructions to using 
it if anyone is interested, just ask.  See it here:
