I'm not familiar with the error message and not sure if it has anything to 
do with Echo link.  Here is another way to get to volume control apart from 
Echo link:

Start menu/ all programs  / accessories /entertainment / volume control

There may be some hot key or shortcut, but I'm not aware of it.

Once you get here, you will need to  select the options menu then tab down 
till it says"adjust volume for playback".  Use the down arrow till it says 
"recording" then tab down till it says "ok" or something and hit enter. 
You will now be in the recording control that I mentioned before and you can 
tab through till you get to the mic controls.
