It might be the acid from the tomato juice that's causing you some problems.
Whole tomatoes have never bothered me, but tomato liquids, such as tomato
sauce, tended to give me indigestion in the past, which was I think caused
by the increased acidity. Raw onion is also acidic and also tended to give
me indigestion. Many people add sugar to tomato sauce to make it less
acidic. However, this doesn't explain why V8 juice didn't give you problems.
