I am in process of reading the book now (received it for Christmas) and the only thing I can say is that I urge everyone who has not yet read the book to go out right now, buy it and read it. As someone involved in the sciences, I really appreciate Taubes efforts in the book to evaluate each of the major studies, to explain the inadequacies of epidemiology and how these inadequacies must lead to basic and/or clinical research to be meaningful, and I appreciate his vigorous attempt at objectivity. Perhaps most importantly, he demonstrates how science can be negatively influenced by politics and human nature (wishful science). Yes he addresses cancer. Yes you should read the book - I think you will be surprised at what you learn.

the lecture he focused mainly on excessive carbohydrate consumption as a
cause of obesity and related ills such as diabetes and a light touch on
heart disease.

In the book does he refer to cancer at all? For me, that is where the
natural fruits and vegetables come in: for their phytonutrients.

In my mind it's the sugar and imbalance of fatty acids in health. Grains are just plain wrong for us too. Veggies meat fat and certain fruits. Organic berries rule. Oliva
