My 6 year old son was diagnosed in September with Celiac disease, and he is on a gluten free diet since then. Already last winter he started running and wetting his eyes with saliva frequently, an ophthalmologist visit then was useless, "probably dry eyes". It went away by itself in late winter, early spring. We had hoped that now being on the gluten free diet this winter he will not be bothered again by his eyes, but unfortunaltely it started up badly again. He says that his eyes are burning. They are not red inside, only the area around the eyes looks terribly red from all the rubbing with saliva. He will not let us put any eye drops in the eyes. Today and yesterday we were outside for extended periods in the snow, and this was the only time when his eyes were not troubling him.I thought that perhaps he has some vitamin a deficiency or some other deficiency/imbalance due to the malabsorption from celiac disease, which might still not be totally healed.
Another eye appointment with a  specialist at Children's hospital this friday brought again no real answer. The good news is that they did not find anything wrong with the eyes. The bad news is that his eyes are really bothering him, and we do not know what to do. The diagnosis "Dry eye" for a 6 year old seems so strange to me, and it reminds me of all the doctors visits before his celiac diagnoses where we heard , well, he is on teh short side, some kids are just short, or he is just lactose intolerant.
At a celiac holiday meeting we heard from another family that their child had very sensitive eyes before the celiac disease, and that it went away after about a year being on a gluten free diet. Do others experienced this? Any ideas?
Thanks so much, Christine
