I don't pretend to be a hardware or internet expert, but I can share a
couple of possiblities.

I have a Linksys router and I have cable now, but at one point I was using
DSL and DSL needs one of them, I think it is the modem, to be set for
"bridging" and your DSL provider should help you with that.

Also, sometimes they are both (modem & router) trying to use the same
address for something (I can't remember what exactly) but they have to be
different and you have to change one of them. If the DSL person you talk to
doesn't understand, keep asking for a supervisor or a senior tech. Its
possible that Linksys could help you if your unit is still in warrantee -
they are only good about tech support till your warrantee runs out.
This may not be your problem, but it's one idea. Try to get to a tech who
knows what "bridging" is and how to set bridging mode. It's something you
can write down and do yourself if you need to do it again. Or maybe that
was only with Bellsouth or only with the type of modem I was using, but its
worth a shot.

If your connection drops, before you call tech support and wait interminably
on hold, or plug and unplug stuff, try this....

Start > Run > Cmd

at the prompt, enter "ipconfig /release" (everything turns up
zeros)
at the next prompt enter "ipconfig /renew" (re-acquires everything)

The first one releases your internet connection (also good if you are
installing a firewall or just want to cut off your internet for awhile some
other reason - maybe leaving the PC for an hour).

The second one re-acquires your IP Address & such and re-establishes your
internet connection.

Since I learned this trick, so far (knock on wood) it has fixed every
dropped connection I've had. When I think of all the phone holds and the
plugging and unplugging & resetting stuff I've done.....

Good luck,
AnnaSummers

Subject: [PCBUILD] Internet not Connecting without Replugging Connection

I bought a new computer with Windows XP put on it. When I got the
computer to connect to the Internet I had to unplug the cable connected
to my Linksys Router and replug in after it boots up to get the internet
(DSL). It wasn't a big deal to do this. My virus program was running out
and I uninstalled it getting a virus. I had this removed by a computer
repair place. When I got the computer back the USB chip was disabled so
I connected the mouse and keyboard through the PS/2 ports. I was able to
connect to the internet without replugging the cable into my Router.
When I got the USB ports working again (Disable through the BIOS enabled
them again) the problem with connecting to the internet occurred again.
Could this be a interrupt problem or something else? As long as don't
reboot the computer I don't have to replug my DSL connection in to
connect to the internet. Only once after rebooting.
