I have a Gateway 700X computer, that is about six anhd a half years
old, running Windows XP Pro, LG Monitor, ATI 9800 Radeon Pro graphics
card and a Hauppauge video card. Except for the monitor and video card
everything else is original. Over the last two weeks or so, during
startup, vertical lines resembling bar codes appear on the Windows
startup screen, the Gateway startup screen and the desktop as well as
around the mouse pointer. In conjunction with the bar codes 14 of 26
icon pictures (the wording is still there) do not show on the desktop
and the screen resolution comes up small. The picture produced by the
video card is mostly tiny green squares. The first thing I did was
update the graphics card drivers by going into add or remove programs
and using the ATI uninstall utility. After reboot, Windows searched the
web for the latest drivers and installed them. The desktop and mouse
pointer came up with no bar codes and all but 5 of the icons
reappeared. The screen resolution changed from nornal to large and the
video card functioned normally. When I shut down and restart the
barcodes reappear, icons disappear, and screen resolution goes back to
small. Every thing repeats if I uninstall and reinstall the drivers
again. Can anyone give me some direction as to what is going on.
Thanks in advance for any help.
