Thanks for the help. Are you saying that if there is dust stuck in the fan, I can clean it? Or do I need a new fan? I can't tell how to get this fan off of the heat sink. The heat sink is very dusty, but i can't get to it because of the fan. I just cleaned the inside, but that was the one thing I couldn't get to. Is there some kind of special tool to get to the tiny black nubs down in the holes in the corners of the fan?

If you've seen the fan moving while the computers on I doubt its anything but dust stuck in the fan, causing some kind of rubbing, which would explain why it sounds like its humming or buzzing. Thermaltake, Arctic Cooling, Zalman, Cooler master, are all reputable companies that have different fans of all size. I know Zalman makes more than just 120mm fans because I own one!

Can anyone recommend a good heatsink/fan and/or fan? I looked a Zalman, but I don't have enough room in the case for another 120mm fan, it would bump into my memory. I need the standard size.
(I have 120mm ball fans in the front of the case (blowing air in over the HDDs), the back of the case (drawing past the mother board), and on the power supply at the top of the case (also a vent over it on top). The case is aluminum and stays quite cold.)
It's making noise because the fan is wearing out?? The PC is less than 2 years old and is turned off at least every night. Is it hurting anything to run it in the meantime, as long as the fan is running, until I find a new fan?
Thanks, AnnaSummers

Ann,
Your processor would NOT be making any noise. If it seems like it is coming
from that area, it would have to be the fan. There is no sense in trying to
clean the fan--purchase a new one. Make sure the new one has a ball bearing
(it will state so on the box) and not a sleeve bearing. The fan is usually
held to the heatsink with four screws.
Good luck.

Subject: [PCBUILD] Noise - Processor
There has been intermittent noise (humming, buzzing, chattery humming)
coming from my PC. I opened it, thinking it was one of the HDDs, but it
appears to be the processor. I can see under the fan that the heat sink is
very dusty, but I don't know how to get the fan off of the heat sink to
clean the heat sink. The processor is the only part that was to hard for me
to lock in place by myself.
Does anyone know if the dust could be causing it, or if I need to look for a
new processor? (This one is only a year and a half old.) CPU AMD|A64
3200+ 2.0G 939 512K R (Venice).
Thanks,
Ann Fennell
