When man started settling down in permanent settlements, pollution
ensued (I mean, think about it - no toilets.) However the beginning of
industrialization with all its smoke and factories brought air emissions
to a new level and big cities were plagued with smog, especially London
with its propensity for fogs. Other big cities in Europe were plagued
by smog back in the late 1800s - we just don't hear about them.

I recall reading that the smog is actually less of a problem now than
back then because of our efforts to control emissions.

Meir, I understand your pain - we down here in NC have been sweltering
in the heat since early August - I am soooo ready for cooler Fall
weather which we don't normally get until October or November. Humph!
Hang in there.
