Try one of the Comet rubber-duch-type antennas.  I don't have the model 
number of mine any more, but it has worked great.  It is considerably longer 
than the stock antenna, and much thinner--almost like a wire--but again, 
I've had great luck with mine.

I think it cost about $20 from Ham Radio Outlet.
