    You said "Part of it is that people who are in the prime of life are 
just to busy trying to earn a living to invest in the community like
they used to, and so that puts even more of the burden on older people."

    Another factor that I think plays a part is that society has become much 
more mobile over the last 50 years and move around a lot, and do not put 
down roots.   People are less likely to get to know their neighbors.  I see 
this wherever I have lived in apartments, we walk by one another every day 
and no one says hi to the other.
