Tom,

John is exactly right.  The meter needs to be between the radio and the 
tuner so you can tell when the radio is happy with the lowest swr.  That's 
the point of the tuner in the first place.  it's confusing, I know, but 
that's the way it should be.  That way, when you use the tones, you can tune 
for minimum when you're in the swr position.  I imagine you know this but, 
when you first transmit and you haven't tuned your tuner yet and the swr 
might be quite high because of that, the tone won't be continuous but will 
pulse.  As you tune, and the swr comes down, the tone will settle into a 
steady tone that will be quite easy to minimize with further tuning.  As 
with most of these things, the more you do it, the better you'll get at it. 
What I do sometimes when I think I'm getting close to 1 to 1 is cut the 
transmitted signal and note the difference in tones between signal and no 
signal.  When there is no difference, your there.  Lou
