I have always maintained that if the broadcast stations were cleared out, 40
meters would be the best overall hf band we have.
Excluding solar blackouts, 40 is always open to somewhere. Even in the
middle of the night, you can usually get a good balance of near and distant
stations.
It is also easier for city dwellers to install full size dipoles and even
delta loops at a more effective elevation than is usually possible for 80
meters.
All you need is one good backyard tree and access to the fence or taller
shrubs on either side of your property to hang a nearly perfect inverted v
that is all but invisible.
