It's all in the settings. Some people have no clue how to set them up and
the hand mics hardly ever sound good on the newer radios. You put a decent
mic on a 570 and they sound decent. I had someone tell me once he could pick
a 570 out on the air any time. Funny, he never did believe me when he found
that was what I was running at the time though that's just what I was
running, with a little help with the mic audio but not much. The TS-870 and
TS-2000 are the preferences of most of the big time audio people also and
they're newer radios. I know the 570 can't compete with them or my old
TS-940 which wasn't too far off the TS-2000 in transmit audio the way I had
it setup, but it's nowhere near as bad as some of them. It's all in the
settings and the mic. People don't take the time these days to get the
settings right. I have yet to hear a hand mic I like either, some are better
than others but especially on the newer radios, people might as well talk in
to a tin can. Makes me want to make the contact and get out of there, but
with a decent mic, and it doesn't take much, the newer Kenwoods sound great.
I suppose it depends on what you're listening on too, I'm sure an older
radio with 2.0 or 2.4 KHZ receive band width will never appreciate my 3.0
KHZ wide TS-2000 but I still get great reports.
