Wright Museum of African American History will serve as host to a free symposium, Saturday, May 19, 2007, 11:00 am to 4:30 pm, focusing on the peoples and traditions of the historic Kingdom of Benin. Now incorporated in the modern day West African country of Nigeria, Benin is known the world over for its remarkable works of art in bronze and terracotta. Organized by the Edo Arts & Cultural Heritage Institute (EACHI), the symposium will feature a film and remarks by Prince (Dr.) Ademola Iyi-Eweka on the spiritually renewing annual Igue Festival. Those attending the gathering will also have the special treat of witnessing the performance of dances and drumming, as well as a parade of traditional ceremonial dress presented by the spectacular Aghabiomo and her Uyiedo Cultural Group. According to Osaretin Ehimwenma, President of the Edo Arts & Cultural Heritage Institute, .This is the first time combined activities of cultural dances and the festivity of ancient Benin is being displayed outside the motherland. Special guests of honor from Benin will also include First Princess Evbakhavbokun Erediauwa and Chief S. O. Igbe who serves as the Iyase or Prime Minister of the historic Kingdom. Reverend (Dr.) Iyalekhueosa Aghahowa, the secretary of EACHI, notes that the .objective of this symposium is to present Benin culture and educate the outside world on the rich heritage of the Benin people. The Institute also plans to promote its mission of informing the world about Benin history and art through exhibition of palace treasures never seen before outside of Nigeria. In 2005, Prince Ada Erediauwa led a delegation of representatives of EACHI to the Wright Museum for initial talks about organizing and hosting such an exhibition. Mr. Bamidele Agbasegbe Damerson, director of exhibitions and research at the museum said, .This is indeed an historic moment. It is the first time that a representative from a royal house of a West African Kingdom has consulted with a museum in the African Diaspora regarding a major exhibition of this type. The proposed exhibition will serve as a visible reminder of the greatness of Benin that is part of the glorious heritage of the African American. The symposium is intended to garner community interest and support for the forthcoming exhibition.
