It goes in the charger upside down, contacts pointing toward the back. I'm 
not sure how long to charge it but it will cut back to a trickle charge when 
it's done, I think it charges in only a couple hours but I usually put mine 
in over night or until I change batteries until the following morning and 
thus far, in 2 years, I haven't had any problems.
