Don,

I did mine last August, a few weeks before it was to expire.   Within a few 
days you will show up on the FCC site and others like QRZ, showing an 
effective date.   That date will be whatever date it was processed  and put 
into effect.   Your new expiration date will not change, it will still be 10 
years     from your original exp date.  You don't get any extra time by 
renewing early.
