You can use either the serial or parallel port according to the pin
configuration of either kind of port.

The circuit is well documented on the TR log site - and others.

Rather than an NPN device, an opto coupler is preferable owing to its
isolation of the input/output interfaces.

I haven't seen any of them for sale, nor have I seen good plans to make one.

I'd have to go parallel port anyway since my serial ports are all full, I've

seen them but never good plans with out pictures, nor have I seen those 
interfaces for sale anywhere. Otherwise, I'd probably try that.
