Back in 2004 I created my first website on the subject of celiac
disease. At the time I used some web design software that dated back
to the 20th century, and now, 5 years later, it was really starting to
look very 20th century.

Over the years I had added various bits of software to the site to
create an Amazon Associates store, a discussion forum running SMF from
Simple Machines (highly recommended!) and most recently a third
software package that performed searches on YouTube and allowed
viewing YouTube videos while still on the site.

So not only was the main website design old and, well, not very nice,
there were three distinct software packages each with it's own user
interface.

In addition to these issues, software updates of the very well
maintained SMF forum package had recently rendered the theme I was
using obsolete.

Last week I decided that this was no longer acceptable, and I set out
on a project to at least attempt to apply a uniform look and feel to
each area of the website. Bit by bit I propagated the new design from
one area of the site to another, brutally hacking stylesheets and
viciously wrapping content in tables and layers until I was finally
able, just this morning, to get the entire website to use my new design.

All of this might not be very interesting to you, especially if you
are not a web designer, but hopefully the website and most importantly
the content might be of some use to the members of this list.

I'd love to get some feedback on the usefulness and appearance of this
website. I do own and maintain over 100 websites, but this one is the
one that is most likely to be useful to people.

If you'd care to see what about a weeks worth of long hours and gritty
determination can do, check out The Sensible Celiac.
