Hi bcmc.
If your T3 is high and your TSH is low, that could be a reason for the
panic attacks. The T3 is the active form of thyroid hormone. Don't really
know significance of the low T4 along with it.
After being hypO for 40 years, in April, I went hypER after a trauma to my
thyroid gland. I don't really understand how this happened, but I had been
on the same dose of thyroid for the past 40 years and always felt hypO.
Anyway, after my pulse went up to 166 one evening, I called my cardiologist
and she worked me in. I knew that the symptoms could be hypER, so we both
agreed blood work was in order. My T3 was high and TSH was .01 -- I've
never been at that level in my life (that I can remember). I wasn't having
panic attacks, but close to it. I think I LOOKED like I was having panic
attacks. My pulse was consistently high -- from 90 up, was hyperverbal.
Feeling VERY nervous. Cardiologist consulted endo and I was told to go off
all thyroid for 4 days. I went off for 6 days. On the 5th day I felt very
good. On the 6th day, still not bad, but starting to "crash" a little.
Anyway, the good that has come out of it is that the cardiologist referred
me to another endocrinologist that I like very much. He has agreed to a
trial of Armour Thyroid 3 grains. If I feel too hyper, he wants me to call
and get blood work done before I lower the dose so he can monitor what's
happening with me and we can make sure we have the right dose for me.
Has anyone else out there had a similar experience after a thyroid trauma?
This is something totally new to me.
P.S. I tried the full 3 grains of Armour in the morning, but felt kind of
hyper. Remembered the Thyroid Association site recommending if you're
taking thyroid with T3, to break it up into 3 doses. I'm taking 1.5 in the
morning. Then 1.5 just before lunch. This seems to be working. If I take
any too late in the day I don't get to sleep, which is different than when
I was on Synthroid (I felt better if I reserved about 1/10th of my dose for
before bed). I'm feeling better on the Armour. I had started dropping
some weight around the time I went hyper, but am still dropping weight with
the Armour without feeling hyper. I feel much more normal. My body
"tingles" like waking up -- cells feel more "alive" -- everything is
better. I have less pain, too. I still have pain, especially if I slip
and eat something I'm allergic to, but I don't usually feel like everything
on me hurts. Also not having to use my walking stick for a few days now.
I'm not superwoman yet, but this is much more than a placebo effect.
During April I was looking like death. Now my color is much better and not
so much big black circles around the eyes. I'm warm without feeling hot.
It's good not to feel so terrible all the time.
