Hi, Alice:
According to my doc, the worst thing to do for people with Hashimoto's is to
take kelp or iodine. I'm not sure why, since kelp helps hypothyroidism. My
doc briefly explained it to me, but I'm not completely clear. Perhaps (my
guess only) when someone is hypo, their thyroid is underactive and the kelp
helps the thyroid to function more... when you have Hashimoto's, antibodies
are destroying your thyroid cells... Once they are destroyed, kelp can't
help it in any way and some how even be detrimental. Before I was dx'd, I
was taking kelp on my own... my doctor told me to stop immediately.
I'm going to see my doctor next Friday, so she should clear it up then...
she may even call me to clarify things before then... I'll let you know what
I find out.
Maybe someone else has a better answer.
All the best,
Elaine Chang
