Make sure you are checked out thoroughly for the heavy bleeding.
You need to know why it's happening (fibroids, etc.)
My docs paid scant attention to my complaints of heavy bleeding
and shortening cycles (5 years) and I ended up with a complete
hysterectomy for atypical hyperplasia/cancer.  This was something
that could have been stopped at an early stage by hormonal
treatment.   

"Women's Bodies, Women's Wisdom" is a book that I have
enjoyed by Dr. Christiane Northrup.  Also recommended are:
"Screaming to be Heard" by Dr. Elizabeth Vliet and "Listening 
to your Hormones" by Gillian Ford.
