How much diet soda has he been drinking? This is a known problem with
some of the sweeteners. Also, it is possible that there was excessive
fuel or lubricant fume exposure.

This is likely the case UNLESS you can really prove that he has been
exposed to chemical fumes or poisoned by foods.
