> Gosh if there is even carbos in lettuce no wonder one loses weight on the
> Zone diet, what can you have and isn't it very, very low in calories???
First of all, yes there are carbs in lettuce, but very few, it isn't
a big deal. You would have to eat a lot more lettuce than most
humans care to to have it make a difference. I measure (eyeball)
some other veggies in salads, but I never pay attention to the
lettuce.
Secondly, I think when you talk about the calories, you're judging it
by WW standards. It's very true that if I ate the number of calories
I eat on a Zone diet on a high carb/low fat diet, I would be
chronically hungry. But I decided a long time ago to side with
Scarlett O'Hara on the hunger issue, and I'm telling you I am not
hungry on the Zone. If I get hungry, I eat! Now, I might eat more
than the original calculations from the first Zone book, but that's
OK - if you look in the second book, Sears gives guidelines for
adding food if you are hungry. To my mind, it makes no sense to eat
exactly the same amount of food every day anyway - our bodies' needs
vary according to activity level, hormones, maybe even season of the
year. Sears' program allows you to make adjustments by listening to
your body.
The whole idea is that instead of fighting your hormonal physiology,
you are working *with* it, and freeing up stored fat to use for
energy. That's why you can get by on fewer calories and be
comfortable. That's the theory anyway.
