Hi, IMAP servers don't work like POP3 servers. I use IMAP, and this problem
stumped me for a while, but here is the solution.

* In the View menu, select the "arrange by" submenu, and then the "view by"
sub menu. If "IMAP is selected, then arrow down one to "hide messages
marked for deletion." Select it. That will hide all the deleted messages
for the moment. They aren't actually deleted, just marked for deletion.

* Once in a while, once a day, once a week or what ever, open the Edit
Menu, and select "purge deleted messages". This will enable you to
permanently delete all messages marked for deletion. Deleted messages on an
IMAP server never go to your delete folder.

The one nice thing about this system is if you accidentally hit the delete
key, the message doesn't actually go away. You can always go the View -
Arrange messages - View Messages and select IMAP. This will magically make
all your deleted messages reappear. You can then in your edit menu change
the delete mark.

If you have more questions about IMAP, let me know.

Bill

Subject: [VICUG-L] Inability to Delete Messages in Outlook 2003 with AOL
E-mail

Hello All:

I got a call from someone this morning who is using Outlook 2003 accessing
his AOL E-mail. AOL uses an imap incoming mail server and an SMTP Outgoing
Mail Server. This person's problem is that when he reads a message, then
closes it and tries to delete it, the message will not delete from his
inbox.

He and I looked at his e-mail account settings as I wanted to see if we
could find a setting that said to leave a copy of messages on the server
like there is with pop3. There isn't one. So, I'm wondering if anyone has
any ideas about what else we might check.

Thanks,
