Hi Keith,
Sorry, I was just writing about the link. My own answers are as follows:
(1) Whether you regard regular vitamin D intake is important enough to act upon
I take 2,000 iu each day from October to June. But I live just south of 49 degrees north latitude and I live on an island just west of the west coast of North America, and we experience a lot of overcast days during the winter months. That means that the limited sunlight I am exposed to is low-angle and of little value for vitamin D production. I have the added problem that I bathe daily, washing away the skin oils that are are necessary for getting vitamin D from sunlight. To further add to this unfavorable situation, I wear clothing. This relegates the interaction between the sun's rays and skin oils to rather small patches of skin on my hands and face. If I were young, muscular, lived in a warmer climate, bathed infrequently, and walked around nearly naked, I might feel differently about taking these supplements. :-)
(2) If you do, what do you do to boost your vitamin D intake during winter
I take supplements, eat fish and fish oil, and eggs (free range when I can get them).
(3) Whether you regard the strategy you use to maintain your vitamin D levels as "paleo"?
Nope. Paleo, for me, is not a religion. It is one of several important factors that inform my food selection choices.
(4) What is your opinion and your experience of sun lamps?
I haven't tried one. I'd be interested in others' ideas on this.
best wishes,
Ron
