The problem that I have with this whlole thread is that everyone is making claims as though they were fact. "It's obvious that blah, blah, blah.... They certainly would not have blah, blah, blah. Etc.". How can anyone legitimately make absolutist statements like these when we are several hundred thousand years removed from the time in question? My word, we regularly get things wrong when dealing with history only a couple thousand years old, or even a few hundred.
Over the years I have read so many claims - on both this forum and others - that later turned out to be either untrue or simply misinterpreted. At the time I would think, "Yeah, that makes sense. That's a good principle to follow..."; to only later feel really stupid for falling for a (probably) well intentioned misstatement.
There are way too many "discoveries" and "inventions" that have happened over time that, if we superimpose a linear style of thinking to our ancestors, should have never happened.
