A forum would be good.

At the risk of starting a fire, may I propose the theory that the major papers that defined the theory of 'acting white' were written by 'outsiders.' American Black culture is complex and not easily understood; outside observers very often get it wrong. Because people's own cultural filters used to classify observations can add or subtract elements so that they 'fit' or reinforce their own cultural biases. 

We see evidence of the 'myth of acting white' everyday in Madison schools. Rather than focus on fact that some kids don't manage to make it all the way through, take a look at what they go through before that is an established fact. Even kids who are doing poorly continue to go and try; even when schools do not go the extra mile to help and when they allow fear to dictate how they relate to students, the student's first choice is not to give up. We as a community don't always acknowledge that.
