Same way you'd know if the tooth was still there.  Redness, swelling, pain, that would worsen instead of getting better.  Use a mouthwash of 1 part hydrogen peroxide and 3 parts water.  Or just plain old salt water.  wash the mouth several times a day. Stick to soups, broth for a few days...    Oliva
