    The first we hear of, namely the world-circling voyage of Ferdind 
Magellan, had no problem with scurvy (vit. C deficiency) because he was 
wise enough to take many barrels of raw sauerkraut.
All other food was preserved. Later mariners were foolish.

Those who ate raw didn't need anti-oxidants.
