Degree and area of specialization:
BA required. Masters or additional experience preferred. Demonstrated ability to create online content, preferably for a journalism-oriented site. Demonstrated writing skills suitable for online environment. Demonstrated knowledge or interest in Islam, or a demonstrated ability to become knowledgeable about pertinent issues, required.
Minimum number of years and type of relevant work experience:
Demonstrated versatile online production skills, including ability to create content in a variety of formats, including text, audio, video or flash-type environments. Demonstrated ability to work in a fast-paced, flexible environment. Desire and ability to talk about online activity in a broadcast setting. Ability to write effective online copy. Knowledge of basic html, blogging platforms, and online communities. Ability to work constructively with team members. Knowledge of public broadcasting environment, and online news evolution. Ability to develop creative approaches to stimulating online conversations on a variety of topics. Read widely and interact with community in order to research subject matter for this program.
Principal duties:
Duties include soliciting comments on show topics from online community; participating in planning for future shows, suggesting ideas and program guests, especially from online community sources; managing ongoing discussion threads, acting as moderator where necessary; staying fully versed in emerging issues. Participate in online interactive content creation (examples: writing a blog, producing a podcast, creating Flash content). Responsible for maintaining, updating, and managing show website and blog; responsible for maintaining, nurturing, and growing online community associated with radio show. Work collaboratively on an experimental project and be able to continuously innovate with and adapt to new media tools. Must be committed to discussion that is civil, engaging, surprising at times, but also fair and inclusive. In addition to working closely with Global Studies (the lead unit on the project) and Here on Earth's production team, this position will interface with th
e various UW centers in face-to-face dialogue as well as in online social media framework. This position will be high-profile, so this person must be able to reflect the missions of Wisconsin Public Radio and the University of Wisconsin as a responsible, informed ambassador. Work will be done in office and studio locations as well in other campus and community settings. Work schedule may require varied hours.
Additional Information:
Facilitator and online leader for the 2008-09 program series: Inside Islam: Dialogues and Debates, produced by Here on Earth: Radio Without Borders (HoE) in cooperation with UW's area and international studies centers. The HoE radio program is part of a larger, collaborative, externally funded project among various UW units that also involves the creation of an extensive web resource. This position will be a creative force in establishing a new dynamic for discussion in both the online and broadcast environments. This position will be the link between the radio show and the wider community, will promote the show's editorial content online providing text, links, photos, video, and generally creating an online presence for the broadcast and building a community of listeners to support it and contribute to its production. Oversee creation and management of discussion threads that connect to Inside Islam broadcasts. This position is only renewable if future funding is obtained.
