Judy's right! They are actually finding that there are some very
interesting relationships between female hormones and autoimmune
illnesses, including thyroid disease. This is explored somewhat in two
interesting books:
* Screaming to Be Heard, Hormonal Connections Women Suspect and Doctors
Ignore," by Dr. Elizabeth Vliet, and
"Listening to Your Hormones" by Gillian Ford
As Dr. Vliet said, for a long time, they keep finding that all these
particular diseases show up more often in women than men, and men
doctors keep standing around saying, "gee, wonder what's different about
women's physiology that they get these diseases in greater numbers than
men," and Dr. Vliet basically says D-U-H!!! How about
cyclical/fluctuating HORMONES, guys????????
It is also the subject of more study at NIH, and there are some
promising developments treating certain autoimmune diseases with
increased or reduced hormones.
