In a message dated 97-07-04 04:16:26 EDT, you write:

<< I have recently read that in order to burn fat, your system clicks in
after 30 minutes--so, optimally, you have to walk or exercise more
than 30 minutes at a time. While less than 30 minutes is good for
cardiovascular, endurance, etc., you have to go beyond the 30 minute
point to do any good for fat reduction. I have been walking 3 miles,
(40-45 minutes), 5 days a week, on Weight Watchers since January and
have lost 15 pounds. So, it *is* do-able .... but it's not very
 pleasant. >>

I have also found that my weight is far more manageable when I work out as
hard as possible (which is hard when one is hypo) as well as longer. When I
decrease duration at the expense of intensity, I gain weight.
Unfortunately, I have to invest time and intensity in a hard workout. As
you say, however, it is possible to manage weight with this approach.
