If you check out virus detection statistics from someone like AV-Test at
http://www.virusbtn.com/news/2008/09_02, you'll see that AVG, Avast, and
Avira, the three major free anti-virus applications, are all competitive
with Norton, McAfee and the other anti-virus applications.
Differentiators include things like the user interface, performance,
automatic updates and other bundled utilities. Note that AVG and Avast
also have suites that you can purchase which bundle other utilities,
such as firewalls, in with the anti-virus software.
Note that I myself used to use AVG 7.5, but I recently switched to
Avast. I thought the interface was cleaner and it used less resources
than AVG.
