deb,

I am sharply aware of this painful situation. I have come to know too
many young folk that have MFAs in creative writing.

An argument that I used to hear, until I stopped caring to listen,
against traditional trades education programs is that parents don't see
jobs in it for their kids.

Who the hell propagated the bright idea that there is a career in
creative writing?

When Amazon last year held a novel contest, with promise of publication
and promotion to the winner, there were something like 10,000 entries.

It is like a lottery, only more expensive to play.

I think my mother was right when I told her I wanted to be a poet... oh,
Jes%$(@)*$s, KENNETH... have a back-up plan like in a real job!
