What I did for a friend in the same boat, after he had it all programmed is 
I just put any old thing in memory 0, 146.52 or something, just so he had 
that beep. You can go in the software and probably move everything up 1 slot 
but it's probably a lot easier to just put a simplex freq in channel 0 or 
something. I know what you mean, the TM-271 is that way and a friend of mine 
actually programmed his like you did but he uses the beep while driving so 
he doesn't have to look down at the radio. We just put that simplex freq in 
channel 0 and he's happy again.
