FT450 and ham radio delux.

I have a FT 450 and downloaded ham radio deluxe.  I am using a USB 
converter and the same 9 pin cable  I use with my Kenwood 700 to connect 
to the ft 450.  For some reason, the computer and radio won't talk to 
each other.  It's on com 1 and the speed set in the radio is 4800.  
Depending upon what options I Choose in the connect screen, I either get 
error messages or the computer just sits there saying it's connecting.  
Any ideas?
